This term applies to the access of a transport vehicle to the transferee's property. Considerations would include enough room to park the vehicle, distance to the front door, if there are elevators, and number of floors at the residence. |
| AGENT |
This is another moving company that has been commissioned /appointed to act as a partner in the move, or is an affiliate or alliance company. The agent services are typically included in the quotation, and will be responsible for receiving the shipment at destination and clearing it through Customs. |
| BILL OF LADING |
This is the legal document that acknowledges the release of your goods to the carrier, and the document is also your receipt. |
| BINDING QUOTE |
A guaranteed price, based on the inventory, and includes the charges associated with completing a move. |
| BONDED WAREHOUSE |
A warehouse that meets all legal specifications of the governing community, and is allowed to receive and store shipments pending Customs clearance. (Domestic moves only) |
| BOOKER |
The relocation company you have chosen to manage your move. |
| CHARGEABLE WEIGHT |
The weight of a shipment, which is used by an airline, to determine the airfreight charges. |
| C.O.D. (cash on delivery) |
This type of move specifies the need for a customer to pay the moving charges at the time of final delivery. Form of payments for COD shipments can be in cash, cashier's check, or by credit card (if prior arrangements have been made)(Domestic moves only). |
| CONSIGNEE |
The person to whom the shipment will be delivered. |
| CONTAINER |
A steel box (usually 20ft or 40ft) for transporting the shipments securely. These are then loaded on the vessels and rail cars for transport. |
| CORPORATE ACCOUNT |
Your company, which is responsible for hiring the moving company to manage your move. They typically hire the moving company for an extended contract term. Additionally, since your company negotiated the relocation rates, they typically assume responsibility for the moving charges. |
| COST PER CUBIC METER/CUBIC FOOT |
The rate calculated on the estimated space for the volume of your belongings. |
| COST PER 100 LBS. |
The rate calculated on the estimated weight of your whole shipment. |
| CRATE |
A wooden container used for overseas shipments, also called liftvans. These wooden crates are loaded into the steel containers before transporting on vessels. |
| CUSTOMS CLEARANCE |
A formal inspection, conducted by the port authorities, which is required before a shipment is allowed to enter a country. |
| CWT (hundred-weight) |
This abbreviation stands for the rate/charges calculated on a per 100 pounds. |
| DECLARED VALUE |
This is the value an owner states on an insurance document for the value of their belongings, calculated on the value of the goods at destination. This value should be used to estimate the amount of insurance coverage a transferee purchases for his belongings. |
| DESTINATION AGENT |
The agent that has been chosen and appointed by your moving company to handle the shipment at destination. |
| EXPORT WRAPPING |
A specialized packing method for packing household goods, which involves using heavier and more resilient materials. |
| FCL (full container load) |
A steel container used to transport your belongings, containing only your goods. |
| FULL COVERAGE |
Applies to the insurance coverage you purchase for your goods. Full coverage insurance policies typically encompass loss of goods, theft, fires and breakage clauses. Typical insurance policies may carry excess or deductible fees, maximum limits on total value or certain types of items, pairs and sets clauses, and specific exclusions like money, jewelry and other irreplaceable items. |
| GROUPAGE |
Sometimes a transferee's shipment will not be enough to fill a complete shipping container. A groupage shipment typically has a longer shipping time associated with it. This type of shipment is also known as a "less than container load (LCL)." |
| INSURANCE CERTIFICATE |
This is the official insurance document you receive from your chosen insurance provider. You will need this original, signed document in the event of a claim. |
| INVENTORY |
A document listing all your belongings to be moved, or to be stored while in transit. |
| LESS THAN CONTAINER LOAD (LCL) |
A shipment that does not fill a complete shipping container, and will be shipped as a groupage. |
| LIFTVANS |
A wooden box used to pack your belongings. |
| LINEHAUL |
The charge associated with moving your shipment from point of origin (such as a port of arrival) to its final destination (such as an agent's warehouse). Linehaul charges vary based on the origin and final destination of a shipment. |
| MARINE INSURANCE |
Insurance coverage to cover your belongings while being transported over the ocean by aircraft or ship. These policies are specifically designed to cover you for unforeseen marine disasters (i.e. storms). |
| ORIGIN AGENT |
The agent that is chosen or appointed by your moving company to handle your move at the point of origin. |
| PACKED BY OWNER (PBO) |
When a transferee chooses to pack his own belongings. Most insurance companies will refuse to insure goods that have been packed by the owners, as most owners are not experienced in packing shipments properly for overseas transport. |
| PACKERS |
Personnel who work for the moving company, and are experienced in packing, wrapping and loading household goods. |
| PACKING LIST |
This shipping document lists all the transferee's goods, which have been packed for a shipment. This document serves four purposes:
- A check sheet - this document is checked at origin and destination of the shipment.
- An acknowledgement of receipt - this is the document that serves as a receipt once the shipment reaches its final destination. It is critical to get a transferee's signature on this document to prove that the complete shipment has been delivered, and that the transferee agrees.
- As an attachment to the insurance certificate - as the evidence document insuring that the transferee agrees that their belongings were delivered in good condition.
- For Customs clearance - proof of the goods being brought into the destination country.
